Well-known functional medicine expert Bryce Wylde, BSc, DHMHS has made it one of his life’s missions to identify best-in-class natural health product ingredients. To explain how RiaGev supports healthy aging, he starts by a quick review of the roles of mitochondria, ATP, NAD and GSH play in the energy cycle. 

  • Mitochondria: These are specialized organelles found in the trillions of cells that make up your body. Molecules found inside mitochondria are critical for energy production, cellular metabolism and overall health.“Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cells whose job it is to convert macronutrients — including sugars, fatty acids and amino acids — into cellular energy.   • NAD: Even during the best of times, ATP production doesn’t work without the presence of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD), a critical coenzyme essential to ATP production. “Research shows human NAD levels decrease by at least 50% as early as in our 40s, which translates into a very negative impact on healthy cell production and longevity. NAD is also critical to the immune system because it activates CD338, which is present on white blood cells and whose loss of function is associated with impaired immune responses.
  • GSH: Energy production within the mitochondria can cause damaging levels of oxidative stress to accumulate. Reduced glutathione (GSH) is “a critical antioxidant whose job it is to protect the surrounding area inside the mitochondria from that oxidative damage.” 

What happens when Bioenergy RiaGev is introduced?
